Make it easy: It connects all your different smart devices into one app so you can control and automate everything from a single place. Look for the Aeotec version (~$35) if buying new.

What we like

  • Connects Zigbee, Z-Wave, and Wi-Fi devices, so it works with almost everything
  • Works with Alexa, Google Home, and Samsung TVs, not locked to one voice assistant
  • Powerful automation engine lets you create complex rules and scenes
  • SmartThings software continues to receive updates even though the hardware is discontinued

What could be better

  • Samsung stopped manufacturing this hub (Aeotec now makes the replacement for ~$35)
  • Setup is confusing for beginners, and the app has been redesigned multiple times
  • Cloud-dependent, so automations can lag when the internet hiccups

Our verdict

The SmartThings Hub connects more device types than almost any other hub on the market. The catch is that Samsung stopped making it. You can still find the Samsung version for ~$70, or grab the identical Aeotec replacement for around $35. The software is still actively updated, so it's not a dead product. But if you're starting fresh, the Aeotec version is the smarter buy.
