Philips Hue Starter Kit
Two color-changing smart bulbs and a Bridge hub that screw into your existing lamps, giving you full lighting automation that goes with you when you move
$90
What we like
- 16 million colors plus tunable white temperature, the most capable consumer smart bulb available
- Bridge hub supports up to 50 devices and unlocks remote access, automations, and sunrise/sunset routines
- Works natively with Alexa, Google Home, Apple HomeKit, and SmartThings
- Bulbs screw into standard E26 sockets, so they go with you when you move (no landlord impact)
What could be better
- The Bridge hub is required for full functionality and needs an Ethernet cable to your router (one more cord to manage)
- Per-bulb cost is high: each Hue bulb runs $20-30, while Wyze or Sengled alternatives cost $8-12
- Light switches must stay in the 'on' position, otherwise the smart functionality doesn't work (this trips up everyone at first)
Best for
- • Renters who want lighting automation without touching a single wire
- • People who want color scenes for movie nights, focus time, or wake-up routines
- • Apple HomeKit users who want the most reliable and polished smart lighting experience
Our verdict
The Philips Hue Starter Kit is still the gold standard for smart lighting, and it's one of the most renter-friendly automation products available. The bulbs screw in, the Bridge plugs into your router, and everything works. The color range and automation options are unmatched. The cost per bulb is the catch: building out a full house gets expensive fast. But as a starting point (two bulbs and the Bridge for about $90), it's the right way to begin. Start with two rooms and expand from there.
